Halo-halo Recipe
Halo-halo, meaning "mix-mix", is a classic Filipino dessert that started post World War 2 when sweetened beans became available after being introduced by the Japanese and ice became a regular commodity. It started out as a humble serving of shaved ice, milk, and sweetened mung beans but through the years it has evolved into the iconic dessert that we now know today.This dessert is not only very customizable, it is also quick to make. It only takes five minutes!
Equipment
- 8 Drinking Glasses
- 8 Spoons
Ingredients
Base:
- Shaved or Crushed Ice*
- Milk of Your Choice
Cheska's Premium Ube Ice Cream
Mix-ins:
- Minatamis na Saging (sweetened sweet plantains)
- Minatamis na Munggo (sweetened mung beans)
- Minatamis na Kamote (sweetened sweet potatoes)
- Kaong (palm fruit)
- Macapuno (coconut sport)
- Sago (tapioca pearls)
- Nata de Coco (coconut gel)
- Gulaman (gelatin)
- Langka (jackfruit)
- Leche Flan (caramel custard)
- Pinipig (pounded rice flakes)
Instructions
- Add about a spoonful each of the mix-ins of your choosing to your glass until it is half-full.
- Fill the rest of your glass with the shaved or crushed ice and pour 2 spoonfuls of milk on top.
- Finish your halo-halo with a grand scoop of Cheska's Premium Ube Ice Cream then make sure to "mix-mix" it all well to taste all of the flavors in every bite!
Notes
- Mix-ins can be found ready made and are sold in jars at most Asian groceries.
- *Ice shaving equipment can be found online or in restaurant supply stores.
